What insurance does a business need?

Any business that employs people must have Workers Compensation cover, as it is a statutory requirement.  Fines and penalties apply for trading without Workers Compensation insurance.

Public and Products Liability is very important for any business, as it covers third party property damage and personal injury claims, arising out of a company’s work or products.

Office Insurance can be extended to cover buildings, stock, contents and tools both inside and outside the office.

Corporate Travel Insurance is important for any business that employs workers who travel.  It can also be an incentive for hiring and keeping staff.

Professional Indemnity insurance is important for any business where there is an element of advice or design in the work eg. solicitors, business consultants, real estate agents etc.  Professional Indemnity insurance covers professional errors and negligence associated with wrongful advice or design.

Management Liability insurance should be a serious consideration for any business in today’s increasingly litigious society.  Australia is widely regarded as being second only to USA with regards to litigation, so Management Liability insurance has never been more important.  It covers the directors and managers of a company as well as their personal assets against a whole range of different claims such as OH&S investigations, employee theft, wrongful dismissal, libel and slander etc.

If you're thinking of starting up your own business, or already own a business and would like your insurance reviewed, call Westralian Insurance today!  (08) 9302 1388...or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

What insurance does a make-up artist need?

You will need a Public and Products Liability policy if you are a make-up artist.  It is very important to check your policy coverage though, to ensure there is a treatment risk extension on the policy.  The coverage afforded under this extension varies by insurer, so you will need to read it very carefully to ensure it covers the application of make-up.

You may also want to consider covering your makeup kit if you are a mobile artist – as this would most likely be very expensive to replace if it were stolen from your vehicle.

If you have employees, or use subcontractors, you will need to cover them for Workers Compensation.  Depending on your business structure, you may be able to cover yourself on the Workers Compensation policy – or if you're unable to do so, you may consider an Income Protection or Personal Accident and Illness policy.

What insurance does a builder need?

The most important policy for a builder to carry is Public Liability.  This covers third party property damage and personal injury.

Builders always come into contact with the public and are often on third party property, so Public Liability claims are frequent.

Tools are also important to insure for their full replacement value.  Without their tools, builders are unable to work so covering them (especially against theft) is vitally important.

Workers Compensation is a statutory requirement for builders who employ others.  Many construction companies will not allow builders on-site without adequate Public Liability and Workers Compensation insurance.

Finally, Contract Works is another policy that builders should consider.  It covers a building contract during the construction phase and can include all tools and materials on-site.

There's a lot to consider as a builder and Westralian Insurance can help!  Call us today on (08) 9302 1388 or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

What insurance does a carpenter need?

Firstly, you will need insurance covering your Public and Products Liability.  This will provide you with cover should you be negligent and cause damage to someone else's property, or cause injury to a third party.

You should also consider covering your tools - as a carpenter will usually carry expensive items such as drop saws and laser levels.  There are various levels of cover for tools available, including theft from a locked vehicle or premises and fire or damage caused by a collision or overturning of a vehicle.  An optional level of cover you can also include is Accidental Damage – ensuring you'll be covered if you drop that expensive laser level!

If you are engaging the services of subcontractors or employees, you will need to cover them for Workers Compensation.  Dependant on your business structure, you may be able to cover yourself on the Workers Compensation policy – or if unable to do so, you may consider an Income Protection or Personal Accident and Illness policy.

Why do I need Professional Indemnity insurance?

Professional Indemnity insurance covers professional errors and omissions, wrongful advice and professional negligence.

It is vitally important for any business that gives advice or provides design services.

Professions that should consider P.I. insurance include insurance brokers, solicitors, architects, management consultants and environmental consultants to name a few!

Professional Indemnity claims are not as common as Public Liability claims but they are often very expensive and involve a large amount of legal costs. Westralian Insurance recommends that most businesses consider at least a $2 million indemnity limit.

Although not a legal requirement, the insurance industry considers Professional Indemnity to be one of the most important policies for any small, medium or large business to consider.

What insurance do I need for my mobile plumbing business?

Most importantly, you will need a Public and Products Liability policy to cover your activities as a Plumber.  You will find that most policies have a limitation on underground services claims – this means that you need to dial before you dig and check the location of underground pipes and cables before carrying out any excavation work.  If you don’t check prior to commencing works, you may find that a subsequent claim will be declined.

Secondly, you want to ensure that you have coverage for your tools.  A good insurance policy should cover your tools for Fire, Damage in a collision and Theft from a locked vehicle or premise.  It is also possible to have the Theft cover extended to include Theft in the Open Air if you wish.

If you engage any employees or subcontractors, there is a requirement by law to cover them for Workers Compensation.

Income Protection or Personal Accident and Illness cover is also recommended.
