Can I get insurance in another state?

Many Public Liability policies insurance brokers provide, offer Australia-wide cover so they allow you to work in any state or territory.  Workers Compensation policies arranged in WA will also allow cover for incidental trips interstate.

However, if the worker permanently resides in a state other than WA, then Workers Compensation must be arranged in that state. ('Permanently resides' means 6 or more months of the year).

Do I need insurance for my cleaner?

Your cleaner should have their own Public Liability insurance to cover any potential damage to your property.  However, they may not have Workers Compensation for themselves in the event of injury at your premises.  Many Home and Strata insurance policies can be extended to include Workers Compensation for domestic workers such as cleaners and gardeners, often at no additional cost.

How do I insure my artwork?

Artwork is generally insured on a home and contents policy, but may need to be specified separately depending on its value. Extremely high-value artwork can be insured on its own separate policy with a specialist artwork insurer, if the value is deemed to be too high for a normal home policy. These types of policies will often require an independent valuation which may need to be updated periodically.

For more information on insuring your artwork, or something else of value, call the professional and friendly staff at Westralian Insurance on (08) 9302 1388, or visit www.westralianinsurance.com.au

Do I need insurance to mow lawns?

Any business that comes into contact with third parties should consider Public Liability insurance before they start trading.  Someone who mows lawns may damage third party property, or even injure a third party during the course of their work, so Public Liability with a minimum level of $5,000,000 should be considered.  Tools of Trade and lawn mowers can also be insured.  Sometimes these items can be included on the same policy as Public Liability under a section called General Property.

If you have, or are considering purchasing a lawnmowing business, now's the time to ensure you have the correct insurance cover.

Do I need insurance to practice reiki?

Reiki practitioners are in constant contact with the public and therefore public liability would be their biggest risk to insure.  Some reiki practitioners set up in shopping centres and they must have a minimum of $20 million public liability to work there.  If the reiki practitioner has a physical address from which they operate, they should consider a business package policy to cover contents, stock, glass and possibly business interruption to cover their income in the event of a claim.

Workers compensation is also a legal requirement for any reiki practitioners who have employees working for them.

What insurance do I need for my engagement ring?

An engagement ring can be insured under a home and contents policy, but may need to be specified depending on its value.  It should be insured both in and out of the home.  A good policy will offer worldwide cover, however some will restrict cover to Australia only.  You should always insure the ring for its full replacement value and review the value at renewal every year.

What insurance does a carpenter need?

A carpenter’s primary must-have policy is public liability, covering third party personal injury or damage to property during the course of their work. T hey should also consider insuring their tools of trade anywhere in Australia.  A good tools policy will include theft from the open air and theft from unattended motor vehicles which is a common occurrence in the construction industry.

Workers compensation must also be taken out for any carpenters with employees.  Carpenters should also include any sole trader subcontractors who work for them under their workers compensation policy, as sole traders are not able to obtain workers compensation for themselves.
